Dear Friends, Love, “Oh, I’m Bein’ Followed by a Moonshadow”
- Cat Stevens (Yusaf Islam) On Thursday, November 15 the planet Mars moves backward in the sign of Cancer. Mars entered Cancer on September 29 and it will back up into Gemini for January and February then re-enter Cancer on March 5 and continue imprinting us with this energy until May 10. That is a long time! The retrograde period is over on January 30. Mars represents action, drive, will and aggression. In the sign of Cancer, the Archetype of The Mother and Home, it is busy being domestic, connecting with others emotionally, ensuring safety and honoring family tradition. We want to cook, snuggle, help our parents, and get pregnant. The feeling tone is wistful, moody and sentimental. It is the tear in your eye when you hear an old Cat Stevens song. He has a Cancer Sun sign. Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, and Tammy Wynette all have or had Mars in Cancer in their horoscopes. ’Nuff said? With the retrograde, our action is turned inward, delayed, frustrated or reconsidered. We don’t act on the basis of logic. We respond emotionally and by instinct. We tend to hesitate or vacillate. We operate indirectly and sometimes are passive-aggressive. This may sound familiar to my readers because Mercury was retrograde in Cancer this past mid-June through to early July. Spirit really wants us to go deep into an examination of heart connection and feelings, and the roots of the ways that we learned about love in our childhood environment. So until next spring, we all may be feeling like Lloyd Dobbler, John Cusack’s character in the movie, Say Anything. John and writer-director Cameron Crowe both have a Cancer Sun sign and together they created one of the greatest depictions of a sweet, sensitive, yet very masculine guy. (“Kickboxing, Sport of the Future“). Lloyd is the awkward tender underachiever who gets up the courage to date Diane the gorgeous, brainiest shy girl in the high school. His devotion to Diane is his most important goal in life. (“One question: do you need…someone or do you need me? Forget it, I don’t really care.”) We have all had that kind of longing, but it may backfire on us this winter. Lloyd would be considered an underachiever, (“I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that.”) We are likely to be questioning the energy we put into career and material pursuits, as did Jerry Maguire, in another Cameron Crowe movie played by Tom Cruise, another Cancer Sun sign. With the retrograde, our attempts at heart connection
may seem like a failure. Say Anything also depicts very 3 dimensional relationships between Lloyd and his Sister, and between Diane and her Father. Mars retrograde may throw us back into old dynamics with our family or with others on whom we project family. It is a real opportunity for recognizing our own needs and forgiving those who didn’t love us in the way we preferred to be loved. We can also reconsider how we enable helplessness by parenting other adults who could best take responsibility for themselves. Cancer also corresponds to patriotism and loyalty to one’s roots. On September 11 2001, the exaggerating planet Jupiter was amplifying Cancer energy within one degree on the astrological wheel of this year’s Mars turning point November 15. In the months ahead, we will be watching more frustration of war (a Mars function) efforts. Actions taken in ’01 may be undone. Aggression in the name of security may be turned inward towards U.S. citizens rather than outward towards other countries. I close with a quote that is barely relevant, but a favorite dialog I couldn’t resist including:
